Keeping young people safe online
Introduction
This website formed part of my MSc project, which aims to develop a system to help parents, carers, teachers, etc, create a safe environment for young people when they go online and remain in control. If you are interested, you can find out a bit more about the project and read the prototype user manual (pdf). You can now read the final dissertation report!
The testing area
This is where people helped with the testing and evaluation of the system. This was an essential part of my dissertation and I really appreciated the huge level of support I received. There was also short follow-up questionnaire that give people the chance to tell me what they thought!
This is not yet a commercial system and some of the functions did not work or only offered a basic idea of how things might work in the future!
How would it work?
In the fully working version, website owners and parents/carers will register with the site. Once logged in, website owners will be able to add their websites to the database and provide guideline ratings. Parents/carers ("guardians") will be able to set up accounts for young people ("users") and download a special toolbar. Each user account can be tailored to suit the individual or, say in a classroom setting, a single account can be set up for the whole class. Find out more ...
How can I get involved?
I truly believe that the theoretical model I have developed could go a long way to helping protect young people when they are online. I would like to take this forward and would welcome talking to anyone with a shared interest in making this happen.
